Frequently Asked Questions

I want to reapply. What do I have to submit?

We keep all applications for one year. If you applied the previous year, we will still have everything that you submitted. All candidates that are reapplying have to fill out the AADSAS application again and must submit a new application fee. However, we would expect that you may have letters of recommendation from at least one new source and a changed personal essay.

I sent all of my transcripts and letters of recommendations to AADSAS. Do I have to send separate copies to the schools individually?

AADSAS will make a copy of your materials and send it to us. However, it may get to us quicker if you have it sent directly to us.

When do the applications become available?

The AADSAS application usually comes out each year around mid-May.

When is your application deadline?

Our application deadline is February 1st. Please be aware that we begin interviewing candidates in October. If you choose not to apply until February of the following year, your application will be at the end of the cycle. Please view our timeline if you have questions about the timing of your application.

When should I send the application fee?

We will not process any application fee until we have received the application from AADSAS. Once we receive your application, we will send you a letter requesting it.

Do you have an advanced standing program for foreign trained dentists?

No, because our enrollment has been to capacity for the last few years, we do not have spaces available for advanced standing students.

How soon will I know the admission committee's decision on my application?

It depends on how quickly your application becomes complete and when the admissions committee meets to review applications.

May I defer my admission?

No, we do not usually allow students to defer their admission.

I'm not happy with the results from my DAT. Can you hold my file until I have a chance to retake the test?

No, we cannot place any files on hold.

I am currently attending another dental school. Can I transfer to the University of Michigan School of Dentistry?

No, we are not accepting transfer students.

What is the average GPA for the current class?

The average GPA for the entering class of 2001 was 3.44

What are the average scores for the Academic Average and Perceptual Ability portions of the DAT?

The average is 19 for both portions.

Do Michigan residents have a better chance of getting accepted?

The University of Michigan is a state supported institution. Therefore a slight preference is given to Michigan residents. Approximately 60% of our class will be in-state students.

How big is your entering class?

Each year our target is to enroll no more than 105 new students.

Is it okay to do all of my prerequisite work at a community college?

No, the admissions committee prefers to see prerequisites taken at a four-year college or university.
