School of Dentistry
Campaign for Michigan Total Exceeds $28 Million!

In 1990, under the umbrella of the University's Campaign for Michigan, the School of Dentistry embarked on ambitious $10 million fundraising mission. Component goals for the School's Campaign included $2 million for student support, $3 million for faculty support, and $5 million for facilities renovation projects.

When the goal was made public, there were some vocal critics, as well as some quiet doubters. Many simply hoped we had not set ourselves up for failure. Before long, however, individual departments and programs had identified specific fundraising goals and objectives as part of the School's overall Campaign. The collective effort and enthusiasm seemed to indicate that we could, indeed, make a legitimate run at the $10 million goal. This early momentum was enhanced as many dedicated volunteers and benefactors set their sights a little higher than they had in the past.

Because the early response to the School's effort was so positive, by the mid-point of the Campaign the component goals were increased by $1 million each. The original goal of $10 million, once thought to be too ambitious, had now been increased to $13 million and most considered it to be realistically attainable.

The second half of the Campaign for Michigan brought phenomenal results. Each of the component goals were surpassed as the School's Campaign total more than doubled. The final total for Campaign gifts and pledges to the School of Dentistry was $28.9 million, absolutely unparalleled by any dental school in the country.

More than 4,000 generous alumni/ae and friends of the School of Dentistry supported this Campaign. Never in the history of the School had so many benefactors come together to make such a profound impact on the institution. Students, faculty, staff and graduates will benefit from this Campaign for decades to come.

Michigan has long been recognized as a leader in dental education, patient care, research and service. The Campaign for Michigan will help enhance and ensure this position well into the 21st Century.
