Periodontics/Prevention/Geriatrics

Periodontics/Prevention/Geriatrics includes the disciplines of periodontics, dental hygiene, behavioral sciences and community dentistry/geriatrics. In community dentistry, emphasis is directed toward the development of the dentist to fulfill a responsible role as a health professional in individual, family, and community life. Students will be assisted in acquiring skills in the behavioral aspects of practice management (e.g., communication, interpersonal and group relations). Also stressed is the importance of sustaining objectivity, concern, and adaptability in a changing, multifaceted society. Issues related to the special needs of the geriatric dental patient are addressed in a number of courses in the predoctoral curriculum. Periodontics is concerned with the establishment and maintenance of health for the structures that provide support for the teeth. The educational program is designed to help students develop the ability to instruct patients in prevention of periodontal diseases, to diagnose and treat patients with gingivitis and moderate periodontitis, and to recognize and refer patients requiring specialist care.
