Dr. Hummon attended Northwestern University, completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Cell and Developmental Biochemistry in 1985. After finishing his dental studies at the University of Michigan in 1989, he was accepted into the Graduate Program in Orthodontics in Ann Arbor. Dr. Hummon completed the Master of Science degree in 1992.

Dr. Hummon maintains a practice limited to orthodontics in Birmingham, Michigan, and also teaches in the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic on Monday afternoons. On Monday mornings, he participates in the Dentofacial (orthognathic surgery) Program. Dr. Hummon also received an Award of Special Merit from the American Association of Orthodontics in 1994 for his Masters Research on "the role of the occlusion in mandibular growth regulation in the growing rat."
