April 21, 2002 University of Michigan Dear Orthodontic Residents: The University of Michigan Orthodontics Department is pleased to invite all current and incoming orthodontic residents to the Fourteenth Annual Graduate Orthodontics Residents Program (GORP), August 2-4, 2002. This event is designed to encourage residents to assemble with colleagues from across North America for a stimulating conference featuring some of our specialty's most influential speakers. This meeting which is put on "by residents and for residents," is open to every orthodontic program in the United States and Canada. Following an extremely well-run and attended GORP 2001 at the University of Texas at Houston, we are gearing up for a historical event this summer. We at the University of Michigan are proud to host GORP 2002, and look forward to your arrival in Ann Arbor. Your costs while at GORP will be minimal. GORP will pay the housing expenses of each resident while they are in Ann Arbor, and most meals will be provided. Each resident will be housed in a double-occupancy room at the Mosher-Jordan Residence Hall (a deposit is required to hold the room). FridayWe invite you to participate in the Dale B. Wade Memorial Golf Outing at the challenging University of Michigan Golf Course on Friday morning (8:00 a.m. start). The greens fees for the four-man scramble will be $50.00 per person (includes cart). Housing for golfers will be provided at the dormitories on Thursday night. Reservations are required for golf and housing prior to arrival. Golfers are to check in to housing on Thursday August 1, between 5:00 and 11:30 p.m. Transportation to the course will be provided from the residence hall at 7:15 a.m. Friday. For those not participating in the golf outing, registration will be held Friday August 2, 2002 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Special arrangements will be required if you are not able to register at this time. The meeting will officially begin with the Formal Banquet Friday evening, August 2, at the historic Michigan Union Ballroom. The event will commence with cocktails at 6:00 followed by dinner at 7:30. Our Keynote Speaker for the evening is Dr. James Vaden, Chair of Orthodontics at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. Dr. Vaden will share his perspective on balancing the many personal and professional aspects of an orthodontist's life. Prizes will be presented to the winners of the Golf Tournament during the banquet. An informal evening of socializing and dancing will follow at an establishment within walking distance of the Union. SaturdayWe have an incredible lecture schedule planned for the two day program. The speakers on Saturday morning will be Dr. Thomas M. Graber, Editor of the World Journal of Orthodontics and Editor Emeritus of the AJO-DO, and Dr. Vincent G. Kokich of the University of Washington. Dr. William R. Proffit of the University of North Carolina will be speaking after lunch. In addition, presentations will be given by Dr. Fred Garrett of the AAOF and Dr. Merv Graham of the AAO. The lunch hour will provide you and opportunity to explore Ann Arbor and treat yourself at one of the many unique restaurants on the Michigan campus. Saturday afternoon, participants will move to Palmer field, across from the dental school in front of the residence halls for the GORP Picnic. A variety of activities and competitive events will test your athletic prowess and tickle your funny bone. Pit your program against the country's finest residents and see who takes home the gold, and enjoy lots of good food. Following the picnic, residents will freshen-up for a night out at one of Michigan's hottest night clubs. Vans will transport residents to downtown Ann Arbor for an evening of fun and fellowship. Please Note: Studio 4 dress code mandates no jeans, no sneakers. Dress to impress. SundaySunday's program will feature Dr. Tom Marcel and Ms. Carol Eaton of California, who will discuss practice start-up and management for the new orthodontic graduate.
