Oral Medicine/Pathology/Oncology

Oral Medicine/Pathology/Oncology includes the disciplines of oral medicine, oral diagnosis, oral radiology, oral pathology, oral oncology and geriatric dentistry.

Oral medicine/diagnosis/radiology is a continuum of didactic and clinical experiences throughout the dental curriculum during which the student will achieve proficiency in taking and evaluating a pertinent medical and dental history; performing a thorough head, neck and oral examination; selecting, exposing and interpreting intraoral and extraoral radiographs; synthesizing the collected data into a problem list and differential diagnosis; and developing a logical treatment plan based on the patient's needs. Complementing the courses offered in this area are seminars, case presentations, clinical class conferences, and clinical experience. and extraoral radiographs; synthesizing the collected data into a problem list and differential diagnosis; and developing a logical treatment plan based on the patient's needs.

Oral pathology/oncology includes the study of diseases of the soft and calcified structures of the oral region. The various disease processes are studied with respect to causation, natural history, clinical behavior, and the relationship of a disease in one part of the body to the entire body. Study of the interrelated factors of disease permits correlation between knowledge in all basic science disciplines and clinical experience.

Geriatric dentistry provides all clinical and didactic training to dentistry, dental hygiene, and post-doctoral dentistry students through clinical rotations, outreach programs, didactic courses, seminars, and our geriatric dentistry fellowship program. Patients are seen at the UM School of Dentistry, Medical Center, Cancer and Geriatrics Center, and several off-site nursing homes and community living centers. We have a dedicated scientific research program designed gain a better understanding of the oral health problems in the elderly and how to intervene, prevent, and treat these disorders. Our investigators include dental students, post-doctoral geriatric dentistry fellows, faculty and staff, and visiting students, scientists, and professors from around the world.
