University
of Michigan M2/M4 Shadow Program
Second year Michigan
Medical Students have the opportunity to shadow fourth year students during
the later half of their second year. "Shadowing", in the context of this
program, refers to the role of the M2 as an observer, collecting general
information and getting a feel for the hospital setting primarily in a vicarious
manner. The goal of this program is to provide students with earlier clinical
exposure, and increased familiarization with hospital culture and functioning
before their M3 year. Program participation is strictly voluntary for both
M2s and M4s.
In order to participate,
M2s contact their Class Counselor to request a shadow experience.
The M2 will be provided a name, phone number, and/or email of a volunteering
M4. The M2 then contacts the M4 to arrange a mutually agreed upon shadow
time that lasts between 2 and 3 hours but that does not conflict with
any required M2 experience.
M1 Summer Mentorship
Program
This program operates
during the first three weeks of the summer after the University of Michigan
medical student's (UMMS) M1 year. Students in this program "rotate"
through a clinical experience with a UMMS alumni physician in the greater
Detroit Metropolitan/Ann Arbor areas. Each rotation lasts 3 to 4 days
and students rotate with at least 3 different mentors throughout the
program. Dermatology, Neurosurgery, Radiation Oncology, and Pediatrics
were the specialties represented by mentors during the first year of
this program. For more information, please contact the Co-Director of
Counseling, Eric Middleton, Ph.D., in the Office of Student Programs,
via phone: 6-3509 or email emiddle@umich.edu.
