Galens
Medical Society
Established in 1914, the Galens Medical Society is a tradition at the
University of Michigan Medical School. Originally conceived as an honorary
society, Galens has evolved into a unique organization of medical students
and faculty dedicated to improving the welfare of the children of Washtenaw
County while making medical school life a little more enjoyable.
Geriatrics
Is Terrific (GlsT)
GIsT - Geriatrics
Is Terrific is a group for students interested in geriatrics and preventative
medicine in elderly populations, as well as students interested in community
health and community service opportunities. This group began new in the
fall of 2001, and activities< this year included a yearly flu shot clinic
at the Turner Geriatrics Center and several community screenings for hypertension,
high cholesterol, and diabetes. Medical student volunteers have been specially
trained in administering flu shots, testing blood sugar and cholesterol,
and screening for peripheral neuropathy, as well as counseling patients
on healthy behavior and disease risk factors. We work with physicians
at the Turner Center as well as with MFit. Plans for the future may include
lunches on geriatrics-related topics like Medicare, and setting up a shadowing
program.
Hope
Clinic
This is a clinic in
Ypsilanti that provides free consultation, labs, and
medications to those in the Ann Arbor/Ypsi community who do not have health
insurance. Medical student volunteers are welcome to help serve this patient
population on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings in the clinic's
pharmacy. It is an excellent opportunity to work with nurses, docs, and
pharmacists as a medical team while beginning to master many basic drugs
as they relate to everyday clinical practice. No prior pharmacy experience
is required.
Medstart
Medstart is a group of University students who educate communities about
critical issues that impact today's children. It also encourages a spirit
of advocacy for children and families in need. Medstart allows students
from the schools of public health, nursing, medicine, dental, law, education,
social work, and others to carry the tradition of advocacy with them into
their professional lives, giving children a voice in the decisions of
tomorrow's leaders. That's what Medstart is all about - helping children
and their families by increasing awareness of today's problems and educating
community members so they can make positive changes tomorrow.
Peds
Interest Group
The
Pediatric Interest Group works with the Department of Pediatrics to increase
student and faculty interaction. Medical students and faculty members
from the pediatric deparment are paired up so that medical students have
a peds mentor to become more aware of the pediatric field and have opportunities
to shadow them. We meet with various faculty members throughout the year
as well to learn more about the subspecialties of pediatrics, the lifestyle
of a pediatric resident, life in the private practice, and most of all,
what things are the most rewarding in this field.
Ronald
McDonald House
The house exists to
provide meals for those relatives and friends who are visting and supporting
admitted patients, many of whom are chronically ill. Volunteers will either
shop for the food, cook it, serve it, or all three! It's a great chance
"buy dinner" for people who are always visiting the hospital,
to interact with them, and to let them know you care through a tasty meal
and fun conversation.
Students
for Holistic Health and Healing/American Holistic Medical Associate
SHHH/AHMA is a relatively
new organization, formed in 1998 to enhance the interest among medical
students in complementary and alternative health care. The group supports
the study of serious alternatives to mainstream biomedical care primarily
because of increased patient interest in such therapies. Furthermore,
the group's goals include the understanding of natural remedies and traditional
methods that have proven effective yet have typically been discounted.
Activities facilitate the sharing of knowledge and resources among members
through student lectures, book
suggestions, various seminars, and brownbags that focus on integrative
medicine. Curriculum developments exposing students to various accepted
and proven alternatives are also encouraged.
The
Muslim Health Association
The Muslim Health Association (MHA) consists of Muslim medical personnel,
staff and students affiliated with the University of Michigan Health Systems
and its research institutes. Members of MHA are affiliated with the University
Hospital, Medical school, Nursing school, Dental school, School of Pharmacy,
and the School of Public Health. Among its activities, MHA organizes Friday
congregational prayers held regularly at the University Hospital. MHA
has coordinated with the hospital's Volunteers Services Department to
set up a Visitor Program and to create informational materials for Muslim
patients. Other past activities and ongoing projects include health fairs
and screenings at the local Islamic Center, a proposal for halal meal
options for patients, and a lunch seminar for medical students on "Caring
for Muslim Patients" as well as many other lectures for hospital
staff. For more information, e-mail muslimhealth@umich.edu
