V. GENERAL INFORMATION
Medical School Communications
The Medical School has made a commitment to staff to increase the frequency and quality of communications to faculty and staff. To this end, the following vehicles are regularly used to communicate within the School:

Publications
• Biomedical News-- Monthly research newsletter directed to faculty and staff.
• The Messenger-- quarterly newsletter mailed to all Medical School non-instructional staff via the campus mail system.
• DevelopmentReporter-- Monthly review of financial support received by the MCADO sent to all faculty in the Medical School.
• Vital Signs-- focuses on development and alumni activities and is published three (3) times per year for Medical School faculty, alumni, and major donors.

Electronic
• E-News-- weekly news items sent to the electronic mailboxes of all Medical School faculty and staff.
• The Medical School Review--monthly news articles about the Medical School community.
• E-mail announcements-- sent to the electronic mailboxes of all Medical School faculty, staff and students as needed.

Staff Forum
• Medical School All Staff Meetings-- Meetings with the Dean and invited speakers are held quarterly to discuss issues and programs affecting faculty and staff in the School and to update staff on other University issues. All faculty and staff members are invited.

Campus Mail
The campus mail service provides daily collection and delivery of official University mail on the Ann Arbor campus to all buildings housing a University office. Campus mail is delivered each weekday, including postal holidays. Every office on campus has a "box number, " which is also the supplemental zip code. Be sure to include the box number on all campus mail to ensure prompt delivery. For example, Faculty Affairs' box number is "0628." Correct mailing addresses are:

Books should not be sent via campus mail. Overnight mail is available within the Medical Center at specially marked mailboxes located throughout the Medical Center. There are also Wolverine Tower drop boxes located throughout campus. Campus mail left in these boxes is picked up three times each day and delivered directly to Wolverine Tower. On the Medical Campus, Wolverine Tower drop boxes are located on the second floor of the Hospital-- outside the cafeteria, and at the circle drive outside of the Medical Science I Building.

Conference and Meeting Rooms
Classroom Services, a division of Medical Education, schedules many of the meeting rooms in the Hospitals and Medical School buildings. They have a specific contact in each department. There are also many additional rooms available that are under individual department scheduling control. Check with your department secretary or administrator for available rooms in your department. A listing of large conference rooms available is provided in Appendix C.

Hospital Paging
To page someone in the Hospital:
If you don't know the person's pager #, dial 6-6267 (operator assisted)
If you know the person's pager #, dial 6-6266 (automated)
From off-campus, dial 936-6267 or 936-6266.

ID Badges
ID badges are issued at the Key/ID office on the first floor of the Med-Inn Building in Room C158. Their office hours are 7:00am-4:00pm. Prior to getting your ID badge, you will need a uniqname (see below) and a completed and signed authorization form which you can obtain from your department administrator. Key/ID Office: 3-6376

Information Technology
Uniqname
A uniqname (pronounced "unique name") is a personal identifier that is required for faculty, staff, students, and others to use a number of computing services across the U-M campus. You must have a uniqname to use computers in campus computing sites, to connect to the Institutional File System (IFS) to store and share personal files, and to modify entries in the X.500 Online Directory. Your uniqname is very important to you; it is what identifies you to these and other service providers, and will stay with you until you leave the University. You may freely tell anyone your uniqname; it will be used widely and helps others find you in the X.500 directory and to communicate with you via electronic mail. Your email address is your "uniqname@umich.edu".

There may be an individual in your department who can issue uniqnames. If not, uniqnames will be issued by the Learning Resource Center (LRC) on level three of the Taubman Medical Library, room 3901. Once you have turned in a Uniqname Request Form, your uniqname should be ready by 2:00 p.m. on the next business day. See page 11 for LRC office hours.

You will also receive a UMICH (kerberos) password for your uniqname which will allow you to authenticate, or prove, your uniqname identity when you access services. Do not tell anyone your password. Protecting your password is necessary in order to guard against unauthorized use of services in your name. If you forget your password, contact your department administrator for information on how to get a new password.

Computer Assistance
Medical Center Information Technology (MCIT) and Medical School Information Systems (MSIS) are responsible for maintaining the information technology of the Hospitals and Medical School. If you have questions about computers, email, network connections, or other information technology questions, please see your department administrator, or contact the appropiate help desk.

The Medical School has developed a new web site for Medical School Staff. This site has links that are of interest to Medical School Staff, including many of the links listed in The Messenger, the Benefits Office web site, the University Record Online, and more. If you have suggestions of other links you would like to see on the Staff web page, please send them to Lisa Copeland, lisacc@umich.edu.

While the Medical School's web site deals with issues and information relevant to the School, the goal of the Medical Center's site (http://www.med.umich.edu) is to promote Medical Center services and function as a health resource for the web community.
