Medical School Administration Job Bands The Medical School Administration (MSA) Office developed a banded classification system to acknowledge and reward staff contributions and to recognize an individual’s growth within his/her position. This system flattens our organizational structure significantly and de-emphasizes the importance of titles and salary grades that we find in the current classification system. The new banded system allows a manager to assign/re-assign staff to projects more easily without needing to change the classification of the individual or transfer the work to another specialty unit for completion. Thus, an individual’s skills can be utilized more completely within the work group. While some systems recognize the acquisition of new skills and training, the MSA job banded system recognizes the use of these skills in completing work assignments and provides financial rewards for increased decision making and responsibilities. We have captured the expectations, skills and behaviors required for advancement in a job assessment tool for staff and managers. These tools will make it easier to place staff initially within the bands and recognize job growth for existing staff. Movement within a band is based on an assessment of the individual’s competencies in the following areas: 1. analytical thinking and problem solving, 2. communications, 3. leadership and influence over others, 4. responsibility and decision making, 5. supervision, and 6. technical expertise. The Medical School
Administration job bands will incorporate positions in the Office, Technical
and Professional/Administrative job families. There are five bands in
the system, Band 1 is non-exempt and Bands 2-5 are exempt. |
