June 15-June 27, 2003

University of Michigan Medical School Summer Science Academy brings together 50 high school students (10th and 11th graders) from throughout Michigan to experience campus and medical school life. They spend two weeks in a dormitory, attend classes from 8-5 and participate in evening events highlighting cultural diversity, self-development and the arts.

The goal of this highly successful program is to increase the number of minority and otherwise underrepresented students in the field of medicine. Students who participate in the Academy will be given priority consideration in the University of Michigan's undergraduate and medical school admissions process if they meet the requirements.

Current medical students and program alumni serve as student leaders and mentors. During the two-week session, these students stay in the dorm with participants and provide classroom tutoring, intellectual and social stimulation, one-on-one and small group mentorship, and insight into college and medical school life.

The University of Michigan Medical School takes great pride in the Summer Science Academy and its ability to increase the opportunities for high school students to gain valuable exposure to the world of medicine. Our past participants are now attending undergraduate institutions throughout the United States, including University of Michigan, Dartmouth, Harvard, Michigan State, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Swarthmore, Wellesley and Yale.

In 1999 and 2000, 70% of our Academy participants enrolled in an institution of higher education; 61% to the University of Michigan. Today, 13.2% of our participants from 1995-1997 are enrolled in medical schools at the University of Michigan, Hahneman, Johns Hopkins, Michigan State and Wayne State. Others are pursuing advanced degrees or careers in dentistry, physical therapy, kinesiology, biomedical engineering, pharmacy and psychology.

The application deadline is March 21, 2003. There is a $50 fee that will be applied to the enrollment fee if you are accepted. Application forms can be downloaded from our website.
