BMRC POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS - Download the Application Form

The BMRC Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended to facilitate the successful recruitment of outstanding postdoctoral candidates by providing a guaranteed first year souce of "seed salary support" for qualified incoming candidates. The funding is offered with the expectation that BMRC Fellows will successfully compete for continued external support at the end of their first year.

The program offers one year of salary and fringe benefits at the current NIH funding level. Funding decisions consider the available resources of the mentor, whose primary appointment must be in the Medical School. Special consideration will be given to applications from junior faculty and from faculty with more limited means to support postdoctoral fellows. Finally, the application must include a credible plan for obtaining continuing support for the fellow.

GUIDELINES

Purpose: To facilitate successful recruitment of outstanding postdoctoral candidates by providing a guaranteed first-year source of "seed salary support" for incoming candidates, with the expectation that they compete successfully for continued external support. The intention of this program is to fund postdoctoral applicants in the absence of an immediate source of funding.

Eligibility: Outstanding graduate students or individuals with less than one year of postdoctoral experience, who are likely to qualify for continued external support within one year of this award are eligible to apply. Fellows may not hold faculty appointments at any level. Mentors should be individuals with primary appointments in the Medical School.

Funding Threshold: One year of salary and fringe benefits at the current NIH level.

Proposal Specifications:

  • All applicants are expected to apply for external continued support before the end of the funding year. A credible plan for obtaining continuing support must be part of the application.
  • Awardees who receive overlapping external support within this funding period are expected to return unexpended BMRC support funds.
  • UM graduate students are eligible to apply.
  • Although priority will be extended to US citizens and other candidates eligible for most mechanisms of continued external support, applications will be considered from non-US citizens if alternate continued funding mechanisms can be identified.
  • Applications from minority candidates are strongly encouraged.
  • Fellows are expected to perform hypothesis-based research rather than focus on learning specific techniques.
  • This funding is not intended to serve as primary support for clinical subspecialty training.
  • Available resources of the mentor will be considered.
  • Special consideration will be given to applications from junior faculty and from faculty with more limited means to support postdoctoral fellows.

Applications Process: This program has no deadlines and aims for an expedited review process without formal external reviews in order to facilitate case-by-case recruitment opportunities.

25 copies of the proposal should be submitted to the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, 4107 Medical Science I C Wing / 0624. Applications are available here or by contacting Camille Mrozowski, cmrozow@umich.edu, 764-3611.
