INTERIM SUPPORT FOR BASIC SCIENCE RESEARCH -
Download the Application Form

The Interim Support funding program offers short-term support between a funded grant and a renewal of the project, with a demonstrated likelihood of eventual external support and a pending revision. Funding of up to $15,000 is available to maintain defined projects over a short duration. There are not deadlines for this program. A concurrent proposal to OVPR to meet additional interim support needs (maximum is also $15,000) is also permissable.

GUIDELINES

Purpose: To provide short-term support between a funded grant and the pending resubmission for projects with a demonstrated likelihood of eventual external support

Eligibility: All full-time, on-campus instructional and research track faculty with primary appointments at the Medical School are eligible to apply. Applications from the following are not accepted: postdoctoral fellows, projects to be performed while the PI is on sabbatical, visiting professors, faculty without evidence of investigative independence, and faculty whose work will not continue at the University.

Funding Threshold: $15,000 with the assumption that applicants requiring additional support will apply concurrently to OVPR.

Project Specifications:

  • Applications must include copies of the most recent peer-review evaluation (e.g., NIH Summary Statements).
  • Requests should be limited to the minimum funding necessary to maintain a defined project over a short duration (generally less than 6 months) and are not expected to cover maintenance of an entire lab.
  • Applications should demonstrate a bridge between existing research effort and eventual external support, rather than requesting funding for a project repeatedly denied support and with no existing foundation from which a bridge to eventual funding could be built.
  • Awards in this category will be expected to supplement support from the applicant's department and may not cover budget reductions in existing awards from external sponsors.
  • Applications may not cover the PI's salary.

Application Process: There are no deadlines for this program.

25 copies of the proposal should be submitted to the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, 4107 Medical Science I C Wing / 0624. Applications are available by download here or by contacting Camille Mrozowski, cmrozow@umich.edu, 764-3611.
