Application Information and Instructions
General Information: Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents. Michigan residents do not receive preferential status in the admissions process. A complete application includes: the Medical School Application, Letters of Reference, the MSTP Essay, and the Graduate School Application. The MSTP DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 15 for receipt of the AMCAS application, letters of reference and the MSTP essay. Further information is provided below.
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required except for Biomedical Engineering applicants or students seeking consideration for a Ph.D. in Public Health or through the College of Literature, Science & Arts (e.g. humanities). The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores are required of all applicants.
Medical School Application: Use the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). After the University of Michigan receives your verified AMCAS information, you will be directed to an electronic secondary application. You will automatically be considered for admission to the Medical School alone should you not be accepted into the MSTP.
Letters of Reference: Three reference letters should be sent directly to the Medical Scientist Training Program. At least one letter should be from a research mentor and should focus on the student's qualifications for graduate study and potential for scientific research. References should be from individuals who know the applicant well enough to understand what his/her educational plans and career goals are, and to be able to comment on his/her potential. The responsibility for assuring that references are sent to the MSTP Office rests with the applicant. We will provide copies of the letters to the Medical School Admissions Office. To facilitate the processing of your application, we ask that your recommenders send the letters of recommendation directly to us by fax (734-764-8180) or U.S. Mail to The University of Michigan, Medical Scientist Training Program, 2965 Taubman Medical Library, 1150 W. Medical Center Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0619.
MSTP Essay: This essay should indicate your career goals, including a possible field of work for the Ph.D. degree and why you wish to be considered for our MSTP. Include a description of your research experience(s). The essay should be detailed and should include your relationship to and publications (if any) resulting from the research projects. You may submit the essay by e-mail (mstp@umich.edu) or fax (734-764-8180). Please include your name and AMCAS ID.
Graduate School Application: This application can be downloaded in three formats:
Microsoft Word - Should work for Macintosh and Windows versions
Rich Text Format (RTF) - Should work with most word processors, in case you are not using Microsoft Word.
Adobe Acrobat Portable Document File (PDF) - To open this file, you will need Acrobat Reader (it is free). This file can be printed and filled in with a typewriter or by hand, but unlike the above two formats, it cannot be modified or filled in by computer.
Although the postmarked filing deadline for the application form for the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies is March 1, applicants are encouraged to submit the Graduate School application at the same time as the Medical School secondary. You may email it as an attachment (without signature) or fax it (734-764-8180) or send it by U.S. Mail.
Filing Fees: The University charges only one application fee per academic year. Therefore, if the medical school application fee ($60) is submitted first, no further fee is required to file the Graduate School application form. If the applicant is already enrolled in the medical school, an application fee ($60) must accompany the graduate school application. There is no filing fee for the MSTP itself. Checks should be made payable to the University of Michigan.
