Special Purpose
Trainees
The definition of
Special Purpose Trainees (SPTs) is as described in Article IV, Section
4.9 of the University of Michigan Medical Staff Bylaws.
"Special
Purpose Trainees consist of Practitioners currently enrolled in a formal
education program at an outside institution for whom a temporary educational
rotation on a clinical service within UMH of less than one year has
been arranged with the institution sponsoring the formal education program.
Although not Members, these individuals are involved in the diagnosis
of patient illnesses and their treatment under the direction of an Active,
Courtesy, and/or Honorary Staff Member. HEB shall have the authority
to assign Special Purpose Trainees to a specific Service and grant admitting
privileges upon the recommendation of the appropriate Department Chair
and with the concurrence of the Credentials Committee and ECCA. Special
Purpose Trainees are not eligible for committee membership, may not
vote on the Medical Staff and are not, nor are they required to become,
members of, or pay dues to, the House Officer Association."
- Each year the
number of SPTs will be prospectively determined for the entire Health
System.
- Applications must
be received by a specified annual deadline (to be determined) and any
applications received after that deadline will be considered on a first
come first served basis. When the complement for the year is met, further
SPTs will not be accepted.
- The Office of
Graduate Medical Education will coordinate and manage the number of
SPTs. All programs discussing the potential of accepting an SPT must
obtain prospective written agreement on the duration of the SPT rotation,
their assignments.
- A formal rotation
schedule will be established for each SPT which will be the basis for
determining the contribution of each SPT to the cap.
