Graduate Medical Education

University of Michigan

Statement of Commitment to Graduate Medical Education

The mission of the University of Michigan Medical School is "to educate students, physicians and biomedical scholars and to provide a spectrum of comprehensive knowledge, research, patient care and service of the highest quality to the people of the state of Michigan and beyond". Graduate Medical Education is integral to the educational mission of the University of Michigan.

Through its Health System (UMHS), the University sponsors a full range of Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs ranging from initial residency programs to subspecialized fellowship programs. By sponsoring programs that educate physicians and medical scientists capable of providing highly competent and compassionate patient care and creating new knowledge through scholarly research, the University contributes to the improved health status of individuals and of the public.

University of Michigan GME programs strive to prepare students from diverse backgrounds for their chosen medical careers with the knowledge, skills and values that serve as the basis for the highest quality clinical practice, lifelong learning, scholarly research and community service. The University is committed to providing all trainees accepted into University of Michigan GME programs with the faculty, curricula, patients, physical facilities and supportive environment necessary to meet the programs' educational goals.

Educational sites for University of Michigan GME programs include the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers, affiliated hospitals, and a broad variety of community-based clinical teaching sites. The teaching faculty for the University's GME programs are full-time, part-time or volunteer faculty of the University of Michigan Medical School. Faculty members offer residents state-of-the-art knowledge, demonstrate the latest developments in patient care, model compassionate, culturally sensitive and ethical care, and provide guidance and appropriate supervision to ensure that educational goals are met and patients' health and safety are preserved.
