Frequently Asked Questions

Graduate Medical Education

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a resident?
A: According to the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and the federal government, a resident is any trainee, who has received an M.D. or D.O. degree and is enrolled in an ACGME accredited training program. There is no distinction made between trainees who are in initial certificate programs as compared to those in advanced subspecialty training programs. Internally, we often times refer to the latter trainees as fellows, however, there is no such category of trainee recognized by the ACGME or the federal government.

Q: What is a fellow?
A: We use the term fellow to refer to a trainee who has already received or is eligible to receive primary certification in a specialty. These trainees in advanced subspecialty programs are officially termed residents by the ACGME and the federal government. Officially, there is no such position as a fellow.

Q: What is the application process for the Fellowship Contingency Fund?
A: The Fellowship Contingency Fund has been established to enhance the institution's academic and research missions by eliminating the disincentives for program directors to apply for NIH and Foundation academic training grants. It is specifically designed to cover the difference between NIH and academic Fellowship Programs funded by national foundations (e.g. the American Heart Association), and house officer compensation rates. Funding will be limited to fellowships that are academic in nature focusing on the preparation of future academic faculty. Existing fellows, as well as new training grant fellowship positions, are eligible for funding under this mechanism.

Q: What is the application process for residency programs?
A: The application process at the University of Michigan Health System is handled at the level of the individual program. We do not follow a centralized application process. Qualified individuals who are interested in applying for Graduate Medical Education programs should contact the respective programs to initiative the application process.
