VI. General Information

A. Medical School Communications
The Medical School has made a commitment to increase the frequency and quality of communications to faculty. To this end, the following vehicles are regularly used to communicate within the School.

1. Hard Copy Publications
Biomedical News-Monthly research newsletter directed to faculty and staff.
Medicine at Michigan-Magazine published three times a year by the Medical Development & Alumni Relations Office.

2. Electronic

E-mail announcements- sent to the electronic mailboxes of all Medical School faculty, staff, and students as needed.

B. Campus Mail

The campus mail service provides daily collection and delivery of official University mail on the Ann Arbor campus to all buildings housing a University office. Campus mail is delivered each weekday, including postal holidays. Every office on campus has a "Box Number", which is also the supplemental Zip Code. Be sure to include the box number on all campus mail to ensure prompt delivery.

For example, the Dean's Office box number is "0624".
Correct mailing addresses are:

For outside mail:
Medical School-Dean's Office
1301 Catherine
C4101 Medical Science Building I
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0624

Campus mailing address for University mail:
Medical School-Dean's Office
C4101 Medical Science Building I/0624

Books should not be sent via campus mail. Overnight mail is available within the Medical Center at specially marked mailboxes located throughout the Medical Center. There are also Wolverine Tower drop boxes located throughout campus. Campus mail left in these boxes is picked up three times each day and delivered directly to Wolverine Tower. Wolverine Tower drop boxes are located on the second floor of the Hospital outside the cafeteria, and at the circle drive outside the Medical Science I Building.

C. Conference & Meeting Rooms

Classroom Services, a division of Medical Education, schedules many of the meeting rooms in the Medical Center. They have a specified contact in each department. There are many additional rooms available that are under individual department scheduling control. Check with your department secretary or administrator for available rooms in your department. A listing of large conference rooms available in the medical center is provided in Appendix C.

F. Information Technology

  1. Uniqname
A uniqname (pronounced "unique name") is a personal identifier that is required for faculty, staff, students, and others to use a number of computing services across the U-M campus. You must have a uniqname to use computers in campus computing sites, to connect to the Institutional File System (IFS) to store and share personal files, and to modify entries in the X.500 Online Directory. Your uniqname is very important to you; it is what identifies you to these and other service providers and will stay with you until you leave the University. You may freely tell anyone your uniqname; it will be used widely and helps others find you in the X.500 directory and to communicate with you via electronic mail. Your email address is your "uniqname@umich.edu".

There may be an individual in your department who can issue uniqnames. If not, uniqnames will be issued by the Learning Resource Center (LRC) on the second floor of the Taubman Medical Library. Once you have turned in a Uniqname Request Form, your uniqname should be ready by 2:00 p.m. on the next business day. See page 24 for LRC office hours.

You will also receive a UMICH (kerberos) password for your uniqname, which will allow you to authenticate, or prove, your uniqname identity when you access services. Do not tell anyone your password. Protecting your password is your responsibility in order to guard against unauthorized use of services in your name. If you forget your password, contact your department administrator for information on how to get a new password.

  2. Computer Assistance

Medical Center Information Technology (MCIT) and Medical School Information Systems (MSIS) are responsible for maintaining the information technology of the Hospital and Medical School. If you have questions about computers, email, network connections, or other information technology questions, please see your department administrator, or contact the MCIT help desk.

H. Parking Services
Parking permits are required to park in University lots and structures. There are a variety of lots and structures with the type of parking permits dependent on the proximity of the lot to the University. (See map in Appendix D for parking locations.) Designated areas for people with disabilities are provided in all staff parking areas. To use these spaces, display of the appropriate University Parking permit or hangtag, along with a state disabled permit plate is required.

Faculty members who occasionally bring their vehicles to campus but do not possess an annual parking permit, may purchase daily scratch-off permits (SOP). The permits are valid for a single day of parking and are sold in packs of 10. Two types of scratch-off permits are available:

1. The Yellow SOP is valid in any Yellow or Orange parking lot.
2. The Blue SOP is valid in any Blue, Yellow, or Orange parking structure or lot.

Information on obtaining a parking permit is available through Parking Services. This office is located at 508 Thompson, adjacent to the Thompson Parking Structure. The office hours are 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. They are closed on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
