2002 Clinical Award for the Specialist

Timothy Johnson, M.D., associate professor, Dermatology

An exceptional and dedicated clinician, Dr. Timothy Johnson's clinical care is legendary within the medical center. He has maintained the highest patient satisfaction scores every single survey period within the institution since the inception of the survey process in 1998. Even more impressive is the distance between his ratings, second place, and the mean. His program is characterized by frequent and continuous innovation, and he is committed to relentless improvement of patient care within the scope of maximal efficiency, utilization, compliance, and quality. Integrity, honesty, loyalty, endless energy and enthusiasm, passion, pride, kindness, and compassion characterize his persona.

Dr. Johnson's optimism and humanistic qualities are exemplary. He has been listed in Best Doctors since 1992. His clinical stature as one of the premier clinicians was on stage during his lecture as the inaugural Rhoda Martel lecturer this year entitled: "Oncology Care: Passion, Performance, and Priority". The Ford Amphitheater was standing room only and he received a standing ovation.

The programmatic leadership skills of Dr. Johnson are superior. He was recruited to the University of Michigan in 1990 to build and direct the cutaneous (Mohs) surgery and multidisciplinary melanoma programs. Both programs were relatively low volume with limited research and accolades. Tim built both programs utilizing outstanding organizational, leadership, and people skills. Today, both programs are flourishing in all three areas of clinical care, teaching, and research and are the largest disease specific specialty clinics of their kind in the United States.

Dr. Johnson's performance as a practicing clinician and as an innovative program leader in the specialty clinical care setting are exemplary. He is most deserving of the Medical School Clinical Award for the Specialist.
