James F. Peggs, M.D., associate professor, Family Medicine

photo Dr. PeggsDr. James Peggs is being awarded the Clinical Award for Primary Care for his contributions and powerful influence throughout the Chelsea community. Dr. Peggs has been a member of the greater Ann Arbor medical community for twenty years, during which time he has developed a clinical reputation of the highest order. His clinical excellence is unquestioned, and he has served as an influential role model for dozens of medical students and residents. He is regularly consulted for his general medical wisdom and his expertise in geriatrics and has a regional reputation, which is uncommon in primary care. He has been listed as one of America's best family physicians for the past several years.

Dr. Peggs has provided critical leadership to Chelsea Community Hospital, the Chelsea medical community and the Chelsea Retirement Community (CRC). He has provided the vision, wisdom, integrity, excellence, and compassion to these enterprises, which are so critical to their enduring success. The success of the institution's outreach in Chelsea and its relationship with Chelsea Community Hospital, and the extraordinary growth and success of the CRC are due in considerable part to Dr. Peggs' leadership. The CRC is a multifaceted model retirement community, which includes a range of living and nursing care options.

Dr. Peggs received his Bachelor of Art's degree in Biology from the University of Michigan in 1978. He then went on to obtain his M.D. from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan in 1975. He completed a Family Practice Residency in 1978 at Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. A Geriatric Mini-Fellowship commenced in 1987 from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Dr. Peggs arrived at the University of Michigan in 1978 as an Instructor in the Department of Family Practice and was promoted through the ranks to his current position of Associate Professor, Clinical Track.
