2002 Community Service Award

Andrew Zweifler, M.D., professor, Internal Medicine

Committed to the notion that quality health care is a right, Dr. Andrew Zweifler's extraordinary efforts in support of the Thea Bowman Wellness Institute, which provides primary care services to the medically uninsured people of Highland Park and Hamtramck, exemplifies the type of commitment that deserves recognition by our institution.

The Thea Bowman Wellness Institute opened to its first patient on September 23, 1997, and by the end of 1999 had seen 1,493 individuals in 4,266 encounters. By all accounts, service has continued to expand. The collaborative, interdisciplinary, integrated team approach adopted by the clinic has proven very effective in providing services targeted to the specific needs of patients attending. Because all patients are uninsured, without the efforts of the Institute, most would not have access to preventive care or traditional primary medicine services.

Dr. Zweifler is currently the Medical Director of the Clinic, and he serves without compensation. He has been instrumental in the fund-raising efforts that have allowed the Clinic to hire a Director of patient Care Services and an acting Director to provide stability and focus to the Clinic effort.

Dr. Zweifler's altruism, vision, and commitment make him a very deserving recipient of the Medical School Community Service Award.
