2002
Community Service Award
Karin
Muraszko, M.D., associate professor, Pediatric Neurosurgery
From
her local community spirit, to her extensive involvement in professional
neurosurgery societies, to her pervasive contributions throughout the
entire breadth of the March of Dimes organization, Dr. Karin Muraszko
is a remarkable model for community service.
In light of Dr. Muraszko's
extraordinarily demanding job, her community service efforts show amazing
dedication. She is a member of numerous committees within the University,
and is a tireless volunteer for many local, state, national, and international
organizations. Locally, the Ann Arbor Schools Health Sciences Technology
Program has honored her for her work as a mentor to students. At the state
level, she participates in the Women's and Infant Care Program (WIC) that
provides funding for pregnant young mothers and their children. At the
statewide meeting for this organization in 2000, Dr. Muraszko was the
keynote speaker. Nationally, Dr. Muraszko leads and serves many other
organizations, including serving as President of the American Association
of Neurological Surgeons, and serving on the Neurosurgery Advisory Board.
Dr. Muraszko's work
with the March of Dimes perfectly exemplifies the range and impact of
her community service; she is actively involved locally, statewide, and
nationally. Within the March of Dimes, she was a member of the Organizing
Committee of the UM Health Walk 2000, chaired the entire Southeast Chapter's
Folic Acid Campaign, served on the National Advisory Board, and was a
featured speaker at the March of Dimes National Convention.
Of her extensive
community service contributions, Dr. Muraszko is perhaps best known for
her leadership in Heal the Children. She is driving force behind this
annual 10-day mission to provide neurosurgical care to disadvantaged children
in Guatemala. Heal the Children has dramatically improved the lives of
numerous impoverished Guatemalan boys and girls. Dr. Muraszko finds the
grueling and dangerous work of Heal the Children "refreshing."
It is a most fitting
tribute to this extraordinarily generous and effective faculty member
to receive the Medical School Community Service Award.
