Medical Education Day 2002 is approaching!
Date: Feb. 26, 2002
Medical Education Day 2002, to be held on Feb. 26, 2002, highlights educational innovations taking place throughout the U-M Medical School and makes them available for all to see and experience. The opening plenary session at 8 a.m. features David C. Leach, M.D., executive director of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. His talk, "Competency is a Habit: Assessing the ACGME Competency," will address the growing emphasis on defining and assessing educational outcomes in medical education. Executive Associate Dean James Woolliscroft will follow the plenary session with a local response to this problem. Posters and computer demonstrations will be displayed throughout the day. The program is especially relevant to faculty, residents, students and others interested in discussion and collaborations about medical education.

Although registration is not required, it is encouraged for the small group workshops in the afternoon. If you have any questions, please e-mail Larry Gruppen at lgruppen@umich.edu (936-1644) or Debbie Grifka at dgrifka@umich.edu (936-1649). Graduate Student Council to host second annual "Winter Banquet"
Date: Feb. 22, 2002
On Friday, Feb. 22 from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., the Graduate Student Council will host its second annual "Winter Banquet." Allison Miller is the GSC President and has taken the lead in organizing this year's event. The "Winter Banquet" gives graduate students a chance to get together outside of the lab and classes. It also functions as a community service project. Each year, the students have solicited donations from area biotech companies to help fund local community service projects. This year, the proceeds from the banquet will go towards the purchase of new science equipment for the Detroit Community High Schools. For more information, contact Allison Miller at amzz@umich.edu.

Author speaks on "Difficult Conversations"
Date: Feb 19, 2002
Sheila Heen from Harvard Law School and the Triad Consulting Group is coming to the Michigan Ballroom on Tuesday, Feb. 19 from 9 to 11 a.m. to present a program based on her New York Times business bestselling book, "Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most" (Penguin 2000).

Based on 10 years of work at the Harvard Negotiation Project, the session provides a framework for understanding why some of our most important conversations are so hard, examines the common mistakes we all make, and offers a step-by-step method for handling them with less anxiety and better results. Handling these conversations efficiently is no longer just a good idea --it's integral to the success of a leader, their department, and ultimately, the entire organization.
