U-M
doctors voted 'best' by peers
Scores
of doctors at the U-M Health System are being recognized as Top Doctors
in the latest survey conducted by Consumers' Checkbook. The 2002 survey
for greater Detroit and Washtenaw County was released in July and recognizes
120 UMHS doctors in 34 medical specialties. The complete list of UMHS
doctors mentioned in this year's survey can be viewed at www.med.umich.edu/opm/newspage/2002/doclist.htm
In order to arrive
at the list, which will remain in effect for two years, most active doctors
on the American Medical Association mailing list are surveyed. The survey
asks doctors to state which specialists, in 35 different fields, he or
she would consider most desirable for care of a loved one. Congratulations
to our Top Doctors!
Faculty
Forum on the Medical Student Curriculum
Dean Allen
S. Lichter, M.D. and Joe Fantone, M.D., Associate Dean for Medical Education,
are hosting a Faculty Forum on Thursday, Sept. 5, from noon until
6 p.m. in Towsley. It begins with an overview of new elements of the curriculum
over lunch, followed by poster presentations and demonstrations of learning
tools and materials. A recap and open discussion occupy the 4:30
6 p.m. segment.
Faculty are invited
to all or part of this important forum. The proposed new curriculum, which
will help us attract the very best medical students, is part of our over-all
plan to become one of the top five medical schools in the U.S. The forum
will help faculty by providing as much information as possible in preparation
for the faculty vote on the curriculum. The vote will take place sometime
during the week of Sept. 9. For those who cant attend the
Faculty Forum, a video will be available. Call Kim Lowe at 615-2176.
New
Pages on the UMMS Web Site
Two new pages have been added to the Medical School's web site: the Dean's
Page and the scrapbook cover. When you visit Dean
Allen S. Lichter's page, you will find previous global announcements,
his biography and snapshots of the Dean in the community.
The U-M Medical
School Scrapbook 2002 gives current and prospective medical school
students, faculty and staff a glance at the Medical School's community.
Visit the links and check out previous events. In the coming months, you
will find photos from the White Coat Ceremony and other events.
White
Coat Ceremony 2002 is approaching
A White
Coat Ceremony for the incoming Class of 2006 takes place Sunday, Aug.
18, at 4 p.m. in the Power Center for the Performing Arts. The keynote
speaker will be Dr. Gerald Abrams, professor of pathology. A growing number
of medical schools, including the U-M Medical School, have begun welcoming
new students with the white coat ceremony to honor the beginning of their
medical training and eventual careers in medicine, with special emphasis
on the importance of empathy and caring in the doctor-patient relationship.
Faculty are encouraged to attend the ceremony and welcome the 170 members
of the new M1 class.
Faculty,
Meet UMMS applicants
Each year, UMMS applicants visit the medical campus on Fridays from September
to March for their interviews. Occasionally, applicants request to meet
with a faculty member who is conducting research in a specific
area as part of their campus visit. Typically, the time available on any
given interview day for such an appointment is 3--5 p.m.
An admissions officer
may be contacting individual faculty members to
inquire about availability for an informal exploratory meeting with
an applicant. Meetings would only be scheduled at the faculty member's
convenience. This program is optional and no information about the appointment
is used in evaluating the medical school application. Our role is simply
to inquire about your availability on behalf of the visiting applicant.
For more information, contact Katie Horne, director of admissions, at
kthorne@umich.edu or at 764-6317.
