The Center for the History of Medicine

Activities

photo:old mainWe promote historically informed dialogue in the university, medical, and lay communities about medicine, health care, and health policy issues and develop curricular initiatives in medical history and humanities. The CHM sponsors public colloquia, lectures, and conferences on the history of medicine and medical humanities by prominent scholars, writers, and community leaders. In particular, we sponsor the Annual Horace W. Davenport Lecture in Medical Humanities, the Victor Vaughan Society in the History of Medicine, and the Medical Students Literature and Medicine Club.

We recently launched an oral history project aimed at capturing and preserving the life and career stories of medical professionals and Medical School alumni. In addition, the Center’s staff teach humanities to medical school students and offer courses through the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. The Center also develops and maintains special exhibits and historical displays on the Michigan campus.
