Subject: Elective Tuition Refund Plan-Medical Withdrawals

I am pleased to announce the new University of Michigan Tuition Refund Plan (TRI). This elective insurance plan provides coverage for tuition, mandatory fees and University housing (room and board) costs. This plan will help to minimize the student's financial portion of this loss if the student must withdraw from the University due to qualifying illness.

A student who suffers a serious illness or accident and needs to withdraw from the University prior to the completion of a term often encounters multiple problems. In many instances, withdrawal from classes not only means the loss of time invested in studies, but also significant financial loss.

A.W.G. Dewar, Inc, a private insurance carrier offers the TRI. This plan originated in 1930 to protect the financial investments of students and parents in education. Today, the plan is available at over 1110 secondary and post-secondary schools throughout America.

While the University currently provides partial refunds for withdrawals, they are limited and usually effective only when the student withdraws early in a term. TRI significantly extends and enhances the University's published withdrawal policy. If a student withdraws because of injury/sickness or psychological/emotional reasons, TRI returns 85% of the insured term's tuition/fees and university housing costs. This coverage does not apply if the student drops classes without completely withdrawing.

The 2007-2008 academic year insurance premium costs are based on a percentage of actual charges for Tuition/Fees and Housing, taking into account graduate/undergraduate and resident/non-resident status. Premiums range from $80.00 to $334.00 total for Fall and Winter Semesters.

TRI is an inexpensive form of insurance protection and we urge you to remind your students that this plan is available at your orientations, on literature, or websites. Detailed information, actual premium costs, and an online plan application are available at the Tuition Refund Plan website: www.uhs.umich.edu/tri
